Attendance Policies

Absent, Tardy, or Release of Student

Report an Absence

Be an attendance H.E.R.O.

An attendance H.E.R.O. is Here, Every day, Ready, On time. If your child must miss school, please follow the policies below.

Absence or Tardy Notification

If your child will be absent or tardy from school, please notify the office by 9:00 a.m. If we do not hear from you, we will call to verify your child's absence.

You may call our attendance line at (703) 658-5656, or use our online attendance form.

If your child will be tardy, you may call, or email us at @email.

Tardy Student Arrival

Students who are not in their classrooms by 8:35 a.m. are considered tardy. Late arriving students must be escorted by an adult into the office for sign in.  Students are never to be dropped off in front of the school. The number of times a student is absent and/or tardy is recorded on the Progress Report. Excessive tardiness does impact instruction and learning, so please ensure your child is on time and ready for school.

Release of Student

If a student is to be dismissed early, please email, send a note, or call the school office to let us know the time the child will be picked up. Release of children to persons other than parents or guardians is prohibited unless authorized by the parent or guardian. Definite procedures are followed to assure the safety of children who are released during the day because of illness or doctor’s appointments.

  1. If a medical appointment occurs during school hours, written permission should be sent to the teacher stating the requested time of release.
  2. The parent or guardian signs the child out in the office. To protect instructional time, children will remain with the teacher until notified by the office.
  3. Children may not leave the building during the school day unless signed out by the parent, guardian, or authorized adult listed on the student’s emergency care card.
  4. Parents or guardians must designate on the emergency care card any person who will routinely pick up a child from school other than the parent or guardian.

Virginia State Law

Virginia State law requires that each student who is absent from school must be reported each time by a responsible person. An excused absence is one for which parents/guardians have prior knowledge, consent, and a legitimate reason. Legitimate reasons include: illness of the student, death in the family, and observance of a religious holiday. Absences for family and student vacations are unexcused. According to School Board Regulation 2234, after the fifth unexcused absence the school is to refer the student to the attendance officer.
